The Cleveland Browns beat the Carolina Panthers 21-18 at Huntington Bank Field because they finished drives and Carolina did not. The Panthers outgained the Browns 360 yards to 259 but reached the end zone only once.

The red zone told the story. Cleveland converted 2 of 3 red-zone trips, while Carolina went 1 for 3 and leaned on Ryan Fitzgerald's leg the rest of the afternoon.

How It Happened

Neither team scored in the first quarter. Cleveland broke through in the second, first with an Andre Szmyt 48-yard field goal, then with a 2-yard Deshaun Watson pass to Harold Fannin Jr. at 1:37 for a 10-0 lead.

Fitzgerald started Carolina's climb with a 35-yarder with 27 seconds left in the half. He added a 41-yarder early in the third quarter and a 53-yarder late in it, and the Browns took a 1-point lead into the fourth.

Fitzgerald's fourth field goal, a 37-yarder at 11:41, gave Carolina its first lead of the game. Szmyt answered from 45 yards at 7:30 to put Cleveland back in front by a point.

Bryce Young then hit John Metchie III for an 8-yard touchdown at 4:25, but the two-point run failed. That miss left Cleveland needing only a touchdown to retake the lead.

Watson delivered it. He found Fannin from 14 yards at 1:48, then threw to Denzel Boston for the two-point conversion. That made it a 3-point game, so a Carolina field goal could only tie, and the Panthers never got it.

Carolina's drives stalled all day. The Panthers converted 4 of 15 third downs and went 0 for 3 on fourth down, and they completed just 26 of 48 passes. Cleveland handed them help with 12 penalties for 84 yards, and Carolina still could not turn it into touchdowns.

Key Performers

Deshaun Watson: 2 TD passes to Harold Fannin Jr. (2 YDS, 14 YDS), two-point conversion pass to Denzel Boston
Harold Fannin Jr.: 2 receiving TD (2 YDS, 14 YDS)
Ryan Fitzgerald: 4 FG (35, 41, 53, 37 YDS)
Bryce Young: 1 TD pass, 8 YDS to John Metchie III

Fitzgerald accounted for 12 of Carolina's 18 points, including a 53-yarder. That is a strong day for a kicker and an indictment of the offense in front of him.

Cleveland's ground game did the steady work. The Browns ran 30 times for 132 yards, which eased the load on a passing attack that managed just 127 net yards.

What It Means

Cleveland moves to 2-1 and stays perfect at home at 1-0. It was not a clean win, given the penalties and the thin passing numbers, but the Browns made the plays near the goal line that the Panthers could not.

Carolina falls to 1-2. The road has not been the problem: the Panthers are 1-1 away from home and 0-1 at home, and this loss came down to the final two minutes.

The fix is obvious from the box score. An offense that piles up 24 first downs cannot keep trading touchdowns for field goals and expect to win one-score games.
