The Chicago Bears beat the Carolina Panthers 59-37 at Bank of America Stadium on Sunday, and the run game decided it. Chicago averaged more than 7 yards a carry and scored all three of its third-quarter and late-game rushing touchdowns when Carolina needed a stop.

Carolina moved the ball too, finishing with 478 yards and a perfect day in the red zone. It could not get off the field. The Bears converted 10 of 14 third downs, while the Panthers turned it over 3 times to Chicago's 1.

How It Happened

Carolina scored first when Bryce Young hit Chuba Hubbard for a 4-yard touchdown at 11:33 of the first quarter. Caleb Williams answered with a 9-yard touchdown run, and D'Andre Swift punched in a 1-yard score to put Chicago ahead before the quarter ended.

Williams found Cole Kmet for a 22-yard touchdown early in the second quarter. Carolina responded fast: Young hit Jalen Coker for 51 yards, then ran in a 7-yard score himself to tie it.

The kickers traded field goals, Cairo Santos from 40 yards and Ryan Fitzgerald from 44. With 22 seconds left in the half, Williams broke a 29-yard touchdown run to send Chicago into the locker room ahead.

Hubbard's 2-yard run at 9:02 of the third quarter tied the game again. That was the last time Carolina drew even. Swift scored from 1 yard out at 3:05, and Kyle Monangai followed with a 61-yard touchdown run with 40 seconds left in the quarter, giving Chicago a two-touchdown cushion.

Williams threw a 1-yard touchdown to Jahdae Walker at 6:27 of the fourth. Young and Coker connected again from 8 yards at 4:00, but the extra point was blocked. Swift closed the scoring with a 28-yard touchdown run at 3:40.

What It Means

Chicago opens 1-0 with a road win, and the offense looked like it can win in more than one way. The Bears picked up 13 first downs through the air and 11 on the ground, and Williams hurt Carolina both throwing and running.

The ground game is the takeaway. Chicago ran 17 more times than Carolina and gained more than twice as many rushing yards, which helped it hold the ball for over 34 minutes. When the game was tied in the third quarter, the Bears answered with two straight rushing touchdowns.

Carolina falls to 0-1 with a home loss. The passing game was productive, with Young throwing for three scores and the Panthers outgaining Chicago through the air. The problems were everywhere else: 3 turnovers, a 4-of-9 day on third down and 11 penalties for 84 yards.

A defense that allowed 552 yards will be the focus in Charlotte. Carolina tied the game three times, but the Panthers never forced the stops needed to take control.
