The Jacksonville Jaguars beat the Cleveland Browns 34-10 on Sunday at EverBank Stadium. The game turned on finishing drives: Jacksonville scored touchdowns on both of its red-zone trips, and Cleveland came away without one on either of its own.

Trevor Lawrence did not need the red zone often. Two of his touchdown throws covered 30 and 32 yards, and the Jaguars averaged nearly 10 yards per pass to Cleveland's 7. That is the gap between a team stringing together big plays and one grinding for every first down.

How It Happened

Lawrence opened the scoring at 8:11 of the first quarter with a 30-yard touchdown pass to Parker Washington. He added a 4-yard score to Josh Cameron with 1:42 left in the quarter, and Jacksonville led 14-0.

Cam Little hit a 47-yard field goal at 9:09 of the second quarter. Lawrence then found Brenton Strange for a 14-yard touchdown at 6:18, and the Jaguars took a shutout lead into halftime.

Jacksonville kept going out of the break. Lawrence hit Jakobi Meyers for a 32-yard touchdown at 12:08 of the third quarter, and Cleveland was still searching for its first points.

The Browns finally got on the board with a 26-yard Andre Szmyt field goal at 8:31. A kick that short means a drive that stalled close to the goal line, which was the Browns' story all afternoon. Little answered with a 40-yarder at 1:48 to restore the margin.

The Browns' only touchdown came with 1:52 left in the game, a 46-yard pass from Deshaun Watson to Denzel Boston. By then the result had long been settled.

Key Performers

Trevor Lawrence, JAX: 4 TD passes – 30, 4, 14 and 32 YDS
Cam Little, JAX: 2 FG – 47 and 40 YDS; 4 extra points
Deshaun Watson, CLE: 1 TD pass – 46 YDS to Denzel Boston

JAX Passing: 18-23, 234 net YDS, 0 INT

CLE Passing: 16-22, 185 net YDS, 1 INT
CLE Rushing: 22 ATT, 87 YDS

Lawrence's 4 scoring throws went to four different receivers. The Jaguars' passing game was efficient enough that the run game only had to stay on schedule, and it did, carrying the ball 32 times.

What It Means

Jacksonville opens the season 1-0 with a performance that left little to fix. The Jaguars committed no turnovers, were flagged only 4 times and converted half of their third downs.

Cleveland falls to 0-1, and the problems were everywhere. The Browns converted 1 of 8 third downs, gave up 5 sacks and committed 11 penalties for 75 yards. Add 2 turnovers and it is hard to see how any offense stays on the field.

The possession numbers reflect it. Jacksonville held the ball for nearly 34 minutes and ran more plays on the same number of drives. Cleveland's offense was not overwhelmed play to play so much as it kept beating itself before drives could become points.
