Final: Broncos 30, Rams 26
The Denver Broncos beat the Los Angeles Rams 30-26 at Empower Field at Mile High, and finishing drives decided it. Denver turned all 3 of its red-zone trips into touchdowns, while the Rams scored a touchdown on just 1 of 4.
The Rams moved the ball almost at will and outgained Denver by a wide margin. Too many of those drives ended in Harrison Mevis field goals instead of touchdowns, and a defensive score flipped the fourth quarter.
How It Happened
Matthew Stafford hit Tyler Higbee for a 5-yard touchdown with 4:55 left in the first quarter. Mevis added the extra point for a 7-0 Rams lead.
The second quarter belonged to Mevis. He kicked field goals from 36, 35 and 40 yards, the last as time expired, and the Rams took a shutout lead into the locker room.
Denver tied it in the third quarter without a kick. Bo Nix found Pat Bryant from 5 yards and hit Jaylen Waddle for the two-point conversion, then threw an 8-yard touchdown to Nate Adkins and found Bryant for another two-pointer. The game was tied entering the fourth.
Mevis put the Rams back in front with a 48-yard field goal at 8:40. Talanoa Hufanga answered with a 66-yard interception return for a touchdown, and Wil Lutz's kick made it 23-19 Denver.
The Rams hit back fast. Stafford connected with Konata Mumpfield for a 48-yard touchdown at 3:38 to retake the lead, 26-23. Nix then answered with a 1-yard touchdown run with 47 seconds left, and Lutz's kick made it 30-26.

What It Means
The Rams did nearly everything but win. They ran 82 plays to Denver's 60, held the ball for 34:29 and averaged nearly 6 yards a play.
They undercut that with mistakes. The Rams were flagged 13 times for 91 yards, more than double Denver's penalty yardage, and their 2 interceptions included the one Hufanga returned for the go-ahead score.
Rams: 482 total YDS, 26 first downs, 8-17 on third down, 1-4 in the red zone, 13-91 penalties
Broncos: 257 total YDS, 20 first downs, 7-13 on third down, 3-3 in the red zone, 5-38 penalties
Denver improves to 2-1 and stays perfect at home at 2-0. Its only loss so far came on the road, and home games have been where this team gets results.
The Rams fall to 1-2 and 0-1 away from home. Their lone win came at home, and this one slipped away after they shut Denver out in the first half.
