The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Los Angeles Chargers 22-6 at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday, and the Chargers never reached the end zone. Los Angeles went 0 for 3 in the red zone, and its only points came on a pair of Cameron Dicker field goals.
The gap in efficiency was wide. Kansas City averaged about 7 yards a play to roughly 4 for Los Angeles, and piled up 422 total yards to the Chargers' 259. Both teams turned it over twice, so the giveaways did not separate them. The yardage gap and the Chargers' lack of touchdowns did.
How It Happened
Kansas City struck first. Harrison Butker hit a 44-yard field goal at 11:20 of the first quarter, and Kenneth Walker III broke a 33-yard touchdown run at 7:21. The extra point failed.
Los Angeles answered with a 23-yard Dicker field goal at 1:33 of the first quarter.
The second quarter stayed quiet until the final two minutes, when Kansas City scored 10 points. Walker scored from 2 yards out at 1:49, and Butker drilled a 50-yarder with 2 seconds left to send the Chiefs into halftime with a comfortable lead.
Dicker added a 30-yard field goal at 10:44 of the third quarter. Neither team scored again until Butker's 30-yard kick at 3:52 of the fourth closed it out.
The Chargers also failed on all 3 fourth-down tries and converted just 5 of 16 on third down.
Key Performers
Kenneth Walker III: 2 rushing TD – 33 YDS and 2 YDS
Harrison Butker: 3 FG (44, 50, 30 YDS), 1-2 PAT
Cameron Dicker: 2 FG (23, 30 YDS)
Chiefs offense: 422 YDS, 7.4 yards per play, 23-30 passing, 272 net passing YDS
Chiefs rushing: 27 ATT, 150 YDS, 5.6 per carry
Chargers offense: 259 YDS, 4.1 yards per play, 22-37 passing, 186 net passing YDS, 4 sacks allowed (18 YDS lost)
Walker accounted for both Kansas City touchdowns. The Chiefs ran for 150 yards at nearly 6 a carry, while Los Angeles managed 73 at about 3.
The Kansas City pass rush did its part too. The Chiefs sacked the Chargers 4 times and allowed no sacks themselves, which helps explain why Los Angeles averaged under 5 yards per pass attempt.
What It Means
Kansas City is 5-0 and 3-0 at Arrowhead. The Chiefs were far from clean, committing 8 penalties for 89 yards and finishing just 1 of 4 in the red zone, but they still won comfortably.
Los Angeles falls to 0-6, winless both at home and on the road. The Chargers got into the red zone but came away without a touchdown in this one, and that kind of finish will not dig them out of a winless start.
