The New York Jets beat the Tennessee Titans 23-10 at Nissan Stadium on Sunday by owning the ball. New York held possession for nearly 39 minutes and ran 63 plays, while Tennessee managed 49.
The Jets did not need a sharp third-down offense to win. They converted only 2 of 12 third downs but went 2 for 2 on fourth down, never turned the ball over and kept the chains moving often enough to wear down Tennessee.
How It Happened
New York scored first. Kenyon Sadiq ran in a 3-yard touchdown at 10:45 of the first quarter, and Jason Sanders added the extra point. Tennessee answered with a 42-yard Joey Slye field goal at 5:03.
The second quarter produced only one score. Sanders hit from 33 yards at 5:03, sending the Jets into halftime ahead 10-3.
The third quarter is where New York pulled away. Breece Hall scored on a 4-yard run at 9:41, and Sanders followed with a 51-yard field goal at 4:33 to stretch the lead.
Sanders struck again from 52 yards with 5:00 left in the fourth quarter, pushing the margin to 23-3. Tennessee finally found the end zone at 2:42, when Cam Ward hit Elic Ayomanor for an 11-yard touchdown, but the deficit was too large to matter.
Key Performers
Jason Sanders, NYJ: 3 FG (33, 51, 52 YDS), 2 extra points
Kenyon Sadiq, NYJ: 3-yard rushing TD
Breece Hall, NYJ: 4-yard rushing TD
Cam Ward to Elic Ayomanor, TEN: 11-yard TD pass
Jets rushing: 39 ATT, 152 YDS, 3.9 YDS per carry
Jets passing: 19-24, 215 YDS, 0-0 (TD-INT), 0 sacks allowed
Titans rushing: 14 ATT, 68 YDS, 4.9 YDS per carry
Titans passing: 19-32, 127 net YDS, 1-0 (TD-INT), 3 sacks for 13 YDS lost
The Jets leaned on the ground for volume. They ran 39 times and picked up 11 first downs rushing, more than Tennessee earned rushing and passing combined. The passing game was the more efficient piece, averaging 9 yards per attempt on just 24 throws.
Sanders turned stalled drives into points. His kicks from 51 and 52 yards came after the Jets had already built a two-score lead, and they put the game out of reach.
Tennessee's numbers tell the other half of the story. The Titans averaged nearly 5 yards a carry but ran only 14 times. Their passing game averaged under 4 yards per attempt after sacks, and they lost a fumble.
What It Means
New York opens at 1-0 with a road win, and the formula was clean: no turnovers, no sacks allowed and a 367-195 edge in total yards. A defense that held Tennessee to 4 yards per play and 11 first downs gives the Jets a template worth repeating.
Tennessee starts 0-1 after a home loss. The Titans' only touchdown came with under three minutes left, and their offense never generated enough sustained possessions to test New York. Getting off the field on defense, and giving the run game more than 14 chances, is the obvious fix.
