The Atlanta Falcons beat the San Francisco 49ers 29-20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and the turnover column decided it. San Francisco gave the ball away 4 times. Atlanta never did.
That erased a yardage sheet that favored the visitors. The 49ers outgained the Falcons by more than 100 yards and averaged over 6 yards per play to Atlanta's under 5, but they kept handing possessions back.
How It Happened
San Francisco struck first when Christian McCaffrey scored on a 1-yard run at 9:22 of the first quarter. Nick Folk answered with a 39-yard field goal to make it 7-3.
Kaelon Black opened the second quarter with a 30-yard touchdown run, and the 49ers led 14-3. That was their high point. Michael Penix Jr. hit Nick Muse for a 1-yard touchdown, though Folk's extra point failed, and Folk then drilled a 33-yard field goal as the half expired to cut it to 14-12.
Atlanta took its first lead midway through the third quarter on a 5-yard Penix pass to Kyle Pitts Sr.
Penix found Drake London for a 21-yard touchdown seconds into the fourth quarter, stretching the lead to 26-14. San Francisco answered with a 1-yard Brock Purdy pass to Kyle Juszczyk with 5:05 left, but Eddy Pineiro's extra point failed, leaving it 26-20. Folk's 31-yard field goal with 1:56 remaining pushed it to a two-score game.
From 14-3 down, Atlanta outscored San Francisco the rest of the way. The Falcons did it without a big rushing day, averaging under 3 yards per carry, and they went just 2 of 5 in the red zone.
What they did instead was protect the ball and the passer. Atlanta allowed no sacks and threw no interceptions, while San Francisco was perfect in the red zone and converted 3 of 4 fourth downs. The 49ers just didn't hold onto the ball enough.
Key Performers
Michael Penix Jr.: 3 TD passes – Nick Muse 1 YD, Kyle Pitts Sr. 5 YDS, Drake London 21 YDS
Falcons passing: 25-34, 213 YDS, 0 INT, 0 sacks allowed
Nick Folk: 3 FG made (39, 33, 31 YDS), 2-3 PAT

49ers passing: 27-40, 277 YDS, 2 INT
49ers rushing: 23 ATT, 123 YDS; Kaelon Black 30-YD TD, Christian McCaffrey 1-YD TD
Penix accounted for all three Atlanta touchdowns, each one coming after San Francisco had built its 14-3 lead. Folk's leg kept the scoreboard moving, including the field goal at the end of the first half that cut the deficit to 14-12.
On the other side, San Francisco ran the ball well, averaging over 5 yards per carry. The giveaways wiped that out.
What It Means
Atlanta improves to 3-4, and this was its first home win of the season. The Falcons are now 1-3 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium against 2-1 on the road, a split that has made them a different team away from home.
This result suggests the gap is about execution, not venue. Atlanta was outgained and still won because it played a clean game, and it will need more of those at home.
San Francisco falls to 6-1, losing for the first time this season and for the first time on the road, where it is now 2-1. The 49ers remain unbeaten at home at 4-0. The offense moved the ball well enough to win this game, but 4 giveaways against a team that committed none is a hard deficit to overcome.
