The San Francisco 49ers beat the Los Angeles Rams 27-7 on Thursday night in Melbourne, holding the Rams to a single touchdown and scoring every point after it. The Rams scored once, early in the second quarter, and never again.
How It Happened
San Francisco opened the scoring with a 20-yard Eddy Pineiro field goal at 6:15 of the first quarter. Los Angeles answered at 14:57 of the second quarter, when Kyren Williams ran in from 5 yards out. Harrison Mevis added the kick for a 7-3 Rams lead.
That lead lasted until 4:28 before halftime. Brock Purdy found Demarcus Robinson for a 39-yard touchdown, and the 49ers went to the break up 10-7.
Purdy struck again at 11:03 of the third quarter, hitting Mike Evans from 2 yards for a 17-7 lead. In the fourth, he connected with Deebo Samuel Sr. on a 15-yard score at 12:57. Pineiro closed it out with a 56-yard field goal at 9:43.

Where It Was Won
The 49ers ran the ball with authority. They averaged nearly 6 yards a carry against about 4 for the Rams, and 10 of their first downs came on the ground.
San Francisco was also sharper on third down, converting 7 of 12 while Los Angeles managed just 2 of 9. The 49ers held the ball for nearly 34 minutes.
The Rams moved the ball at times but could not finish. They went 1 for 3 in the red zone and converted only 1 of 3 fourth-down tries. San Francisco, by contrast, went 2 for 3 in the red zone.
Ball security tilted the same way. Los Angeles turned it over twice, adding a lost fumble to its interception, while San Francisco gave it away once. The Rams also drew twice as many penalties, 4 to 2.
What It Means
San Francisco opens the season 1-0, and the win counts as a road victory despite the neutral site. Los Angeles, the designated home team, falls to 0-1.
For the Rams, the concern is the scoring drought. After Williams' touchdown, Los Angeles went the rest of the night without a point.
