California visits NC State on Saturday at Carter-Finley Stadium, and this one should be settled at the line of scrimmage. The Golden Bears give up nearly 191 rushing yards a game, and the Wolfpack have the run game to cash in. Kickoff is at 12:00 p.m. ET on ACC Network.

What Decides It
NC State should be able to run on California all afternoon. The Wolfpack average about 162 rushing yards a game. Cal's run defense gives up more than that on average, so NC State's normal output on the ground looks like a floor here, not a ceiling.
That shows up on the scoreboard. Cal allows nearly 32 points a game, right in line with what NC State scores. The last two weeks have been worse for the Bears: they gave up 41 points at home and 59 on the road, losing both.
California has to win this through the air. The Bears throw for about 285 yards a game, while their run game averages just 84. Leaning on the pass is not a choice so much as the only option.
There is room to work. NC State's pass defense allows about 241 yards a game, so Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele should find completions. The catch is that all that passing has produced only about 23 points a game, and that rate will not keep pace with the Wolfpack offense.
NC State's recent form is the one thing that gives Cal hope. The Wolfpack have lost their last two, falling 31-28 on the road and 38-14 at home on Oct. 10. That home loss is the only blemish at Carter-Finley this season, though, and Cal's own slide has been far uglier.
Players to Watch
California Golden Bears
Passing: Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele – 149-219, 1,555 YDS, 10-5 (TD-INT)
Rushing: Adam Mohammed – 73 ATT, 336 YDS, 3 TD
Receiving: Chase Hendricks – 54 REC, 498 YDS, 3 TD
Hendricks is the volume target in a pass-first offense. If Cal is going to hang around, he needs a big share of the targets and Sagapolutele needs to avoid giving the ball away.
NC State Wolfpack
Passing: CJ Bailey – 143-219, 1,763 YDS, 11-4 (TD-INT)
Rushing: Jayden Scott – 62 ATT, 358 YDS, 4 TD
Receiving: Keenan Jackson – 30 REC, 456 YDS, 6 TD
Scott is the player this matchup sets up best. Jackson is the big-play threat: he has doubled Hendricks' touchdown total on far fewer catches.
Weather
Conditions: Mostly sunny, 61°F, gusts to 15 mph, 0% chance of precipitation
Gusts that strong can push deep throws around. That matters more for Cal, the team that needs its passing game to carry the day.
Prediction
NC State's run game against Cal's run defense is the matchup that decides this, and it points one way. Cal can move the ball through the air, but it has not turned yards into enough points, and its defense has been routed in back-to-back losses. The Wolfpack get back on track at home and cover.
Pick: NC State 34, California 23
