NC State beat California 31-10 on Saturday at Carter-Finley Stadium. Cal did not score in the second half, and the Wolfpack turned a tie game into a rout. The Golden Bears converted just 5 of 18 third downs, and that failure decided the afternoon.

Cal actually held the ball longer, about 31 and a half minutes to NC State's 28 and a half. Little of that time turned into points. NC State did more with less, averaging 7.7 yards per pass attempt to Cal's 4.4.

How It Happened

NC State struck fast. At 13:29 of the first quarter, CJ Bailey hit Deandre Desinor for a 49-yard touchdown, and Kanoah Vinesett's kick made it 7-0.

Vinesett added a 43-yard field goal at 9:28 of the second quarter. Cal answered at 4:58 when Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele found Chase Hendricks for a 30-yard score. Towns McGough then drilled a 38-yard field goal as the half expired, sending the teams to the locker room tied at 10.

The third quarter belonged to NC State. Bailey connected with Chance Robinson on a 38-yard touchdown at 9:40. With 11 seconds left in the quarter, Darius Johnson punched in a 2-yard run to stretch the lead to two touchdowns.

Davion Gause closed the scoring with a 6-yard run at 9:05 of the fourth quarter.

Key Performers

CJ Bailey, NC State: 2 TD passes – 49 YDS to Deandre Desinor, 38 YDS to Chance Robinson
NC State passing: 13-25, 192 YDS, 7.7 yards per attempt
NC State rushing: 40 ATT, 135 YDS, 2 TD
Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, Cal: 1 TD pass – 30 YDS to Chase Hendricks
Cal passing: 29-45, 196 YDS, 4.4 yards per attempt
Cal rushing: 27 ATT, 73 YDS, 2.7 yards per carry

Bailey's two long scoring throws did the damage. The Wolfpack completed barely half their passes, yet gained more per attempt than Cal did on 45 throws. Efficiency, not volume, won the passing game.

The ground game separated the teams. NC State ran 40 times for 135 yards and both of its late touchdowns. Cal managed just 73 rushing yards, which left its offense leaning on the pass.

What It Means

NC State is now 4-4. The home-road split is the story of the Wolfpack's season: they are 4-1 at Carter-Finley and 0-3 away from it. Raleigh has been the place where this team looks like a contender, and Saturday fit the pattern.

That split is the question NC State has to answer. A team that wins only at home caps its own ceiling, and the road record still sits without a victory.

Cal drops to 3-6, including 1-3 on the road. The Golden Bears hurt themselves with 8 penalties for 81 yards and went 1 for 3 on fourth down. Turnovers were even at 1 apiece, so this loss came down to stalled drives, not giveaways.

The offense is the problem. Cal produced 269 total yards and only 15 first downs, and the run game gave it nothing to lean on. Until that changes, the Golden Bears will keep losing games like this one after halftime.
