The Cincinnati Bearcats bring nearly 230 rushing yards a game to TDECU Stadium, where the No. 17 Houston Cougars allow just over 100. Kickoff is Saturday, November 7, at 3:30 p.m. ET on Fox. Cincinnati's best weapon is aimed straight at Houston's best unit, and that collision frames the afternoon.

What Decides It
Cincinnati's run game against Houston's run defense is the matchup that should decide it. The Bearcats lean on the ground, averaging more rushing yards than passing yards. Cole Tabb leads the way with 752 yards and 10 touchdowns on 79 carries.
Houston's defense is built to take that away. The Cougars give up far fewer yards on the ground than through the air, allowing about 257 passing yards a game. If they hold Tabb near their usual standard, Cincinnati has to win with its arm instead.
That is not a hopeless fallback. JC French IV has 13 touchdowns and 3 interceptions, and Cincinnati's 226 passing yards a game sit below what Houston typically allows. But it means the Bearcats would be playing their second-choice game against a ranked team on its home field.
Houston's offense draws the softer defense in both phases. Cincinnati allows about 160 rushing yards a game, well above what Houston gives up on the ground. Through the air the gap holds: the Bearcats allow about 282 passing yards, more than the Cougars allow.
That sets up well for Conner Weigman, who has 20 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. The scoring defenses tell the same story, with Cincinnati allowing about 29 points a game and Houston about 21. The Bearcats are coming off a 49-25 home loss, which does not suggest that defense is trending the right way.
The total looks low for two offenses this productive. These teams combine for about 70 points a game, well above the posted total. Houston averages 36 points and Cincinnati 34.
There is a caution flag. Houston scored just 13 in its most recent game, a road loss at 21-13. At home, though, the Cougars are unbeaten this season, and Cincinnati's defense has not given anyone much reason to expect a low-scoring day.
Players to Watch
Cincinnati Bearcats
Passing: JC French IV – 143-213, 1,773 YDS, 13-3 (TD-INT)
Rushing: Cole Tabb – 79 ATT, 752 YDS, 10 TD
Receiving: JV Gibson – 34 REC, 461 YDS, 4 TD
Tabb is the player Houston's game plan should revolve around. If he gets loose, the Bearcats can shorten the game and keep Weigman on the sideline.
Houston Cougars
Passing: Conner Weigman – 153-233, 2,053 YDS, 20-2 (TD-INT)
Rushing: Makhi Hughes – 117 ATT, 516 YDS, 4 TD
Receiving: Amare Thomas – 41 REC, 620 YDS, 6 TD
Weigman and Amare Thomas should find room against a pass defense that has struggled. Thomas has 6 touchdown catches to go with his 620 receiving yards.
Prediction
Houston wins 38-27 and covers. The Cougars' run defense is the best unit on the field, and blunting Tabb takes away the one thing Cincinnati does best. Weigman should have room against a Bearcats secondary that has given up yards all season, and enough points come on both sides to push this past the total.
