East Carolina beat South Florida 20-17 Friday night at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium on Andrew Conrad's field goal with no time left. The kick won it, but the Bulls lost it on third down, converting just 1 of 10 while the Pirates moved the chains on 6 of 15.
That gap mattered because South Florida did almost everything else right. The Bulls committed no turnovers, completed 17 of 22 passes, averaged 8.1 yards per attempt and held the ball longer. They still could not sustain enough drives to put the game away.
How It Happened
South Florida struck first in the opening quarter. Luke Kromenhoek found Bryson Rodgers for a 26-yard touchdown at 10:25, and Nico Gramatica's extra point made it 7-0.
Noah Perez answered with a 44-yard field goal in the second quarter. Gramatica restored the lead with a 30-yard kick at 1:11, but East Carolina responded before halftime. Emory Williams hit Landon Sides for a 15-yard touchdown with 31 seconds left in the half, tying it 10-10 at the break.
The Pirates took their first lead in the third quarter when Williams and Sides connected again, this time from 8 yards out at 6:24. East Carolina led 17-10 entering the fourth.
South Florida tied it at 9:42 of the fourth on a 1-yard run by Jason Collins Jr. The game stayed level until the final play, when Conrad drilled the 55-yarder as the clock hit zero.

Sides accounted for both of East Carolina's touchdowns, and the Pirates needed every one of them. The Williams-to-Sides connection turned a 10-3 deficit into a 17-10 lead across the end of the first half and into the third quarter.
The ground games were close to even. South Florida ran for 150 yards on 37 carries, East Carolina for 138 on 33, with both teams averaging just over 4 yards a carry. The separation came through the air and on the chains: East Carolina finished with more first downs and more total yards.
What It Means
East Carolina improves to 5-4, and the win fits the pattern of its season. The Pirates are 4-1 at Dowdy-Ficklen and 1-3 away from it, and Friday's game showed why Greenville has been their best setting.
East Carolina also overcame the game's only turnover, a lost fumble, to win it. Winning at home despite losing the turnover battle is the kind of result that separates the Pirates' home record from their road record.
South Florida falls to 6-3 and 2-2 on the road. The Bulls protected the ball, ran it 37 times and won time of possession, but their third-down failures left them tied late instead of protecting a lead. That is the number they will look at first.
