No. 3 Georgia beat No. 17 Florida 27-8 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday, and Florida's 4 turnovers decided it. The Gators threw 3 interceptions and lost a fumble that Georgia returned for a touchdown, while the Bulldogs gave the ball away once.

The other half of the story was the run game. Georgia controlled the game on the ground, and Florida could not get the ball moving on the ground at all.

How It Happened

Georgia opened the scoring late in the first quarter when N. Frazier punched in a 1-yard run with 1:50 left. P. Woodring's kick made it 7-0.

Woodring added a 28-yard field goal at 8:55 of the second quarter, and Bo Walker scored from 1 yard out with 1:55 left in the half for a 17-0 lead. Then came the play that ended the contest. With 29 seconds left before halftime, Q. Johnson sacked T. Jones Jr. for a 3-yard loss, the ball came loose, and Georgia returned it 66 yards for a touchdown.

That swing turned a comfortable lead into a rout at the break. Florida went from trying to answer before halftime to heading into the locker room scoreless and buried.

Neither team scored in the third quarter. Florida finally broke through with 6:59 left in the fourth, when Jones ran in from 2 yards and J. Baugh hit D. Wilson for the two-point conversion. Woodring closed it out with a 21-yard field goal at 3:34.

Key Performers

Georgia rushing: 42 ATT, 217 YDS, 5.2 per carry, 2 TD
P. Woodring (UGA): 2 FG (28 and 21 YDS), 3 extra points
Q. Johnson (UGA): sack for -3 YDS that ended in a 66-yard fumble return TD
Florida passing: 23-32, 198 YDS, 0-3 (TD-INT)
Florida rushing: 28 ATT, 48 YDS, 1.7 per carry
T. Jones Jr. (FLA): 2-yard rushing TD

Georgia's ground game carried the offense. The Bulldogs managed just 101 passing yards, and it did not matter, because they averaged more than 5 yards a carry and held the ball for over 32 minutes.

Florida actually moved the ball better through the air, completing 23 of 32 passes. But the passing game also produced all 3 interceptions, and with a run game stuck under 2 yards a carry, the Gators had no way to stay on schedule. They converted only 4 of 12 third downs.

What It Means

This was a ranked-versus-ranked test, and Georgia passed it decisively. The Bulldogs move to 7-1 with a result that should strengthen their standing near the top of the polls.

Florida falls to 5-3, and the loss exposes a ceiling. A team that turns it over 4 times, commits 8 penalties for 78 yards and cannot run the ball will not beat a top-5 opponent, and the Gators did all three.

The margin was built in the second quarter, but the pattern was clear all afternoon. Georgia won the line of scrimmage, protected the ball, and let Florida's mistakes do the rest.
