What Decides It
Florida's ground game runs into a Georgia defense that has given up little on the ground.
The Gators run for about 194 yards a game, and Georgia allows a fraction of that. Baugh carries the load with 763 yards and 13 touchdowns, so whether he finds room is the first thing to watch.
Florida is not one-dimensional, though. The Gators actually throw for more yards than they run for, about 257 a game, but Georgia allows only 185 through the air. Neither half of the Florida offense gets an easy matchup.
The reverse matchup also favors Georgia. The Bulldogs run for nearly 198 yards a game, while Florida allows about 122 on the ground, so Georgia's run game has room to work.
The offenses are close. The defenses are not.
Georgia scores 43 points a game and Florida scores nearly 40, a gap you could erase with one possession. On the other side of the ball, Georgia allows about 16 points a game while Florida allows about 28, and that difference is the real spread in this game.
Yardage tells the same story. Georgia gives up roughly 276 yards a game, Florida about 377, which means Florida needs its offense to win shootouts while Georgia can win ugly.
The total sits well below what these teams score.
These teams combine for nearly 83 points a game on the season, far above the 56.5 total. Georgia's recent results make a lower number look more reasonable than Florida's do.
Georgia's last two games were one-possession games: a 27-24 home loss, then a 20-17 road win before that. Florida's games have run higher; it won 27-24 on the road last time out but gave up 38 and 45 points in the two losses before it. Georgia's offense has cooled in its last two games, and Florida's defense has been inconsistent.
Players to Watch
Florida Gators
Passing: Aaron Philo – 105-149, 1,341 YDS, 9-3 (TD-INT)
Rushing: Jadan Baugh – 135 ATT, 763 YDS, 13 TD
Receiving: Dallas Wilson – 29 REC, 403 YDS, 3 TD
Baugh has scored more touchdowns on the ground than Philo has thrown. If he finds room, Philo gets manageable throws to Wilson; if not, Philo has to carry the offense against a Georgia pass defense allowing far less than Florida averages through the air.
Georgia Bulldogs
Passing: Gunner Stockton – 117-158, 1,570 YDS, 16-4 (TD-INT)
Rushing: Dwight Phillips Jr. – 47 ATT, 348 YDS, 2 TD
Receiving: Craig Dandridge – 17 REC, 310 YDS, 1 TD
Stockton has been efficient, with 16 touchdowns against 4 interceptions. Facing a Florida defense allowing 255 passing yards a game, he should find openings once the run game forces Florida to commit to the box.
Prediction
Georgia's defense allows fewer points, yards, rushing yards and passing yards than Florida's, and Florida has to beat it both on the ground and through the air. The Bulldogs' recent scoring dip keeps this from becoming a blowout in the 40s, while Florida's defense has given up big numbers in two of its last three games. Georgia wins and covers, and the game stays under the total.
