Liberty hosts Florida International on Saturday at Williams Stadium in Lynchburg, and the game turns on one question: can the Panthers slow a Flames offense that runs for nearly 222 yards a game? FIU's defense has been stingy overall, but it gives up about 121 yards a game on the ground. That leaves Liberty roughly 100 yards of room to work with.

What Decides It
Liberty's run game is the mismatch that should control this game. The Flames lean on the ground, and Kam Davis leads the way with 583 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns. Liberty gains more yardage on the ground than through the air, where it averages about 192 yards a game, for an offense scoring nearly 32 points a game.
FIU's defense is not a soft unit. It allows just over 16 points and 292 yards a game, nearly identical to Liberty's yardage allowed. Its run defense allows about 121 yards a game, and that is exactly where Liberty does its best work.
FIU's best path runs through the air, but the passing game carries risk. The Panthers throw for about 251 yards a game against a Liberty pass defense allowing roughly 177. That is where FIU's offense holds an edge on paper.
JJ Kohl has thrown for 1,637 yards with 10 touchdowns and 8 interceptions, and Maguire Anderson is his top target with 568 yards. Scoring is the concern. FIU averages only about 20 points a game, and Kohl's turnovers are a problem against a defense allowing 14.
Liberty's form points to a comfortable margin. The Flames have won at least 5 straight, scoring 30 or more in every one and allowing no more than 17. Their last two wins came 34-6 on the road and 35-3 at home.
FIU arrives in the opposite direction. The Panthers lost their last two games by 3 points each, 26-23 and 27-24. All 3 of their wins have come at home, and they are 0-3 everywhere else.
Players to Watch
Florida International Panthers
Passing: JJ Kohl – 131-227, 1,637 YDS, 10-8 (TD-INT)
Rushing: Devonte Lyons – 84 ATT, 383 YDS, 1 TD
Receiving: Maguire Anderson – 36 REC, 568 YDS, 4 TD
Kohl's decision-making decides how competitive this gets. If he avoids giving Liberty short fields, Anderson can stretch a defense that has otherwise shut opponents down.
Liberty Flames
Passing: Deshawn Purdie – 80-133, 1,226 YDS, 9 TD
Rushing: Kam Davis – 83 ATT, 583 YDS, 5 TD
Receiving: Makai Jackson – 23 REC, 540 YDS, 5 TD
Davis is the matchup piece. Jackson is the big-play threat, piling up 540 yards on just 23 catches, and he becomes more dangerous once FIU commits extra bodies to the run.
Prediction
Liberty wins and covers. The Flames' ground game should find room against an FIU run defense allowing about 121 yards a game, and an offense that has scored 30 or more five straight times should get there again at home. FIU will move the ball through the air, but a 20-point offense with an interception problem is unlikely to keep pace. With both defenses giving up about the same yardage, this lands just under the total.
