Unranked Iowa shut out No. 25 Wisconsin 30-0 on Saturday at Kinnick Stadium, and the game was decided at the line of scrimmage. The Badgers averaged barely 2 yards a carry, which left them throwing from behind all afternoon against a defense that never let them score.
Wisconsin compounded the problem with 3 turnovers. When an offense cannot run and cannot hold onto the ball, a shutout stops being a surprise.
How It Happened
Iowa opened the scoring at 9:08 of the first quarter on a 24-yard Caden Buhr field goal. Hank Brown then found DJ Vonnahme for a 4-yard touchdown with 1:02 left in the quarter, making it 10-0.
The second quarter stayed quiet until the final two minutes. Brown hit Tony Diaz for a 4-yard score at 1:30, and Buhr added a 28-yard field goal as time expired to send Iowa into halftime up 20-0.
Vonnahme ran in from 2 yards out at 7:54 of the third quarter to push the lead to 27-0. Buhr closed the scoring with a 54-yarder at 2:16, and the fourth quarter passed without a point from either side.
The gap in execution was stark. Iowa converted 8 of 15 third downs while Wisconsin managed just 4 of 13, so the Hawkeyes kept drives alive while the Badgers' drives stalled.
That showed up on the clock. Iowa held the ball for more than 36 minutes and ran it 42 times, grinding down a defense that was on the field far longer than its offense.
Wisconsin also beat itself. The Badgers were flagged 8 times for 70 yards, while Iowa committed just 2 penalties all day.

What It Means
Wisconsin falls to 5-3, and the split tells the story. The Badgers are 4-0 at home and 1-2 on the road, so they have yet to lose at home and have struggled away from it.
This loss fit that pattern. A ranked side that totaled 235 yards and 9 first downs against an unranked opponent will have a hard time holding its spot in the poll.
Iowa moves to 6-2 and 4-1 at home. The Hawkeyes did not need anything fancy: they ran it, completed nearly every pass, avoided penalties and let Wisconsin's mistakes do the rest.
The win is the kind that resets how Iowa is viewed. Beating a ranked team is one thing; holding it scoreless while winning time of possession by a wide margin says the Hawkeyes controlled this game from start to finish.
