Kennesaw State beat Middle Tennessee 44-28 on Wednesday night in Murfreesboro, winning on efficiency rather than volume. The Owls had the ball for just 19:41, but they completed 16 of 19 passes and returned an interception for a touchdown. Middle Tennessee's offense kept the ball and stalled.
The Blue Raiders won almost every volume number. They had 22 first downs to 14, 380 total yards to 318 and more than 40 minutes of possession. None of it mattered against an opponent that averaged nearly 11 yards per pass attempt.
How It Happened
Boogie Woods III opened the scoring with a 12-yard run at 12:32 of the first quarter. Middle Tennessee answered on a 1-yard Roman Gagliano run, then took the lead early in the second quarter on Antonio Martin's 7-yard run.
Rickie Collins flipped the game with two touchdown passes in quick succession: 23 yards to Davis Bryson, then 31 yards to Dylan Gary. Dominic Bourgeois hit a 45-yard field goal as the half expired, and the Owls took a narrow lead into the break.
The decisive swing came at 12:32 of the third quarter. Tywon Christopher picked off a pass and returned it 59 yards for a touchdown, and Collins found Woods for the two-point conversion. Bourgeois added a 38-yard field goal later in the quarter to cut into the lead.
Kennesaw State put it away in the fourth. Collins hit Gary again from 28 yards, Woods punched in a 2-yard run and Daniel Kinney made a 44-yard field goal. Santana Fleming's 100-yard kickoff return and Gagliano's two-point run with 1:42 left only trimmed the margin.

Kennesaw State made almost every throw count. Middle Tennessee's passing game was the opposite: 21 of 44 for 183 yards, 4.2 yards per attempt and 2 interceptions. That gap in passing efficiency, more than anything on the ground, decided this one.
The Blue Raiders ran the ball well enough, with 197 yards on 45 carries. They converted 11 of 20 third downs. But they went 0-for-2 on fourth down and had to settle for field goals twice.
What It Means
Kennesaw State improves to 2-6, with 1 win at home and 1 on the road. The turnover count was even at 2 apiece, but the Owls turned one of Middle Tennessee's into 8 points. On a night with so little possession, that return was the biggest single swing.
Middle Tennessee falls to 4-4. The bigger concern is where it happened. The Blue Raiders are 3-1 at home against 1-3 on the road, so Murfreesboro has been where their season gets built.
Giving away a home game with this kind of possession advantage stings. A .500 team that wins at home and struggles away can't afford to waste the friendly dates, and this was one Middle Tennessee led in the second quarter and controlled on the clock but couldn't finish.
