Marshall Wins in Norfolk

Marshall beat Old Dominion 36-23 on Saturday at S.B. Ballard Stadium, and the Monarchs' 4 turnovers decided it. Marshall gave the ball away once, and that is the gap that settled the game.

Old Dominion outgained Marshall by about 70 yards and still lost by 13. You don't overcome 3 interceptions, a lost fumble and a blocked field goal returned for a touchdown with yardage alone.

How It Happened

Marshall struck first. TJ Lester scored on a 4-yard run at 12:57 of the first quarter, then broke a 49-yard touchdown run to make it 14-0. Maurki James answered with a 6-yard touchdown run, and Jorge Diaz Nicolas hit a 35-yard field goal to send Marshall into the second quarter up 17-7.

Andrew Nelms cut it to 17-10 with a 21-yard field goal, and Diaz Nicolas restored the 10-point cushion from 30 yards with 1:13 left in the half. Then came the play of the game. Old Dominion lined up for a field goal on the final snap of the half, Marshall blocked it, and Xayvion Turner-Bradshaw returned it 100 yards for a touchdown and a 27-10 halftime lead.

Old Dominion got one back quickly. Brandon Crutchfield returned an interception 44 yards for a touchdown at 13:03 of the third quarter, Marshall's only turnover, to make it 27-17. Diaz Nicolas answered with a 34-yard field goal for a 30-17 lead.

Diaz Nicolas added field goals from 30 and 24 yards in the fourth quarter to push the lead to 36-17. James scored again on a 14-yard run with 3:54 left, but the two-point pass failed and the Monarchs got no closer than 36-23.

Marshall's offense was far from sharp. It converted just 2 of 14 third downs and completed only 8 of 18 passes, which is why so many drives ended in field goals instead of touchdowns. What carried the Herd was the ground game: 54 carries for nearly 200 yards, which let Marshall hold the ball for more than 35 minutes.

Old Dominion threw for nearly 330 yards but needed 45 attempts to get there, and the 3 interceptions undid most of it. The Monarchs also ran for just 80 yards and went 0 for 2 on fourth down.

Key Performers

Marshall Thundering Herd

TJ Lester: 2 rushing TD – 4 YDS, 49 YDS
Jorge Diaz Nicolas: 5 FG – 35, 30, 34, 30, 24 YDS; 3 extra points
Xayvion Turner-Bradshaw: 100-YD blocked field goal return TD
Team rushing: 54 ATT, 196 YDS, 3.6 per carry
Team passing: 8-18, 142 YDS

Lester's two scores built the early lead, and Diaz Nicolas kept adding to it with five field goals. Turner-Bradshaw's return turned an Old Dominion scoring chance into 7 points the other way.

Old Dominion Monarchs

Maurki James: 2 rushing TD – 6 YDS, 14 YDS
Brandon Crutchfield: 44-YD interception return TD
Team passing: 23-45, 329 YDS, 3 INT
Team rushing: 29 ATT, 80 YDS, 2.8 per carry
Penalties: 10 for 92 YDS

James accounted for both Old Dominion offensive touchdowns, and Crutchfield's pick six briefly made it a game again. Both teams were sloppy with flags, so penalties didn't decide this one; turnovers did.

What It Means

Marshall moves to 5-3 overall and evens its road record at 2-2. The Herd won without much from the passing game, a sign the run game and the kicking game can carry them on days when the offense stalls.

Old Dominion falls to 2-7 and 1-4 at home. The Monarchs moved the ball through the air well enough to compete, but 4 giveaways and a blocked kick are more than any offense can absorb.
