North Texas beat Florida Atlantic 48-41 at DATCU Stadium because the Mean Green could run the ball and the Owls could not. North Texas piled up 240 rushing yards at nearly 7 a carry, while FAU managed 71 at under 3.
That gap shaped everything else. North Texas held the ball for more than 35 minutes and kept FAU's offense on the sideline. The Owls had to throw 57 times to keep pace, and they did keep pace until the final four minutes.
How It Happened
Dominic De Freitas opened the scoring with a 24-yard field goal at 9:39 of the first quarter. Caden Veltkamp answered with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Branden Hoch. Collin Rogers added a 30-yard field goal with 15 seconds left, and FAU led 10-3 after one.
The second quarter traded punches. Tayven Jackson hit Baron Tipton from 8 yards to tie it, and Veltkamp found Easton Messer from 27 yards to put FAU back up 17-10. Jackson's 3-yard scoring pass to Kyle Koch at 3:05 tied it again.
Jahiem White then broke a 59-yard touchdown run at 1:40 to give North Texas a 24-17 lead. Veltkamp needed only a minute to answer, hitting Messer from 12 yards with 39 seconds left. It was 24-24 at halftime.
North Texas took control in the third quarter. De Freitas hit a 48-yard field goal, and Jackson found Justin Stevenson from 4 yards for a 34-24 lead. Veltkamp cut it to 34-31 with a 22-yard strike to Kaden Shields-Dutton, but White punched in a 1-yard run with 17 seconds left in the quarter to make it 41-31.
Messer's third touchdown, a 34-yard catch at 8:26 of the fourth, pulled FAU within a field goal. North Texas responded with the drive that decided it, capped by Jackson's 2-yard touchdown pass to Koch at 4:02. Rogers' 43-yard field goal at 1:56 made it 48-41, and that was the final score.

Veltkamp's day deserved a better result. Five touchdown passes usually win, but the Owls had no ground game to lean on when they needed to shorten the game.
What It Means
North Texas moves to 6-2 and stays perfect at home at 4-0. The Mean Green are only 2-2 away from Denton, so protecting home field is where their record is being built. This was a game they could have dropped, and the run game is the reason they didn't.
Florida Atlantic falls to 5-3, and the home-road split is now stark: 4-0 at home, 1-3 on the road. The Owls gained 523 yards and scored 41 points in this one, so the offense traveled. The problem was a run defense that couldn't get North Texas off the field.
Turnovers were a wash at 2 apiece, and third downs were close to even. The difference was simpler than that: North Texas ran it, and FAU couldn't stop it.
