Syracuse beat No. 19 SMU 30-27 on Saturday when Steve Angeli hit Noah Meyers for a 2-yard touchdown with 17 seconds left. The Orange trailed in the fourth quarter and scored the game's final 10 points to flip it.
SMU Lost a Game Its Offense Should Have Won
By the final totals, SMU moved the ball better than Syracuse. The Mustangs piled up 421 total yards to 338 and threw for 351 yards at 9.5 yards per attempt. Syracuse managed 200 through the air at under 6 yards a throw.
That edge disappeared because SMU kept giving the ball and the field away. The Mustangs lost 2 fumbles while Syracuse did not turn it over once. SMU was also flagged 9 times for 90 yards, which is more flags and more yardage than Syracuse's 7 penalties for 50.
In a 3-point game, an offense that dominates through the air cannot also lose the turnover battle and the penalty battle. SMU did both.
Total yards: SMU 421 – SYR 338
Passing: SMU 29-37, 351 YDS – SYR 21-34, 200 YDS
Turnovers: SMU 2 – SYR 0
Penalties: SMU 9-90 – SYR 7-50
Syracuse Won It on Fourth Down and on the Ground
Syracuse's third-down offense was poor, converting just 4 of 16 chances. The Orange made up for it by going 4 for 4 on fourth down. Every time they chose to keep a drive alive, they did.
That aggression paired with a run game that clearly won its matchup. Syracuse ran for 138 yards at nearly 4 yards a carry, including Angeli's 26-yard touchdown run on the opening score. SMU, on 31 carries, managed just 70 yards at about 2 a carry.
The Mustangs' offense became one-dimensional, and that made the turnovers costlier. Tripp Woody's three field goals kept Syracuse within reach on drives that stalled, including the 26-yarder at 5:26 of the fourth quarter that set up the final drive.
Rushing: SYR 37 ATT, 138 YDS – SMU 31 ATT, 70 YDS
Third down: SYR 4-16 – SMU 6-13
Fourth down: SYR 4-4 – SMU 0-0
SMU's Road Split Is Now the Story of Its Season
SMU is 5-0 at home and 1-2 on the road after this loss. A ranked team falling to an unranked one indoors is a road problem, not a talent problem, and the yardage totals make that case.
The frustrating part for SMU is the second half. Kevin Jennings threw touchdown passes to Jalen Hale and Yamir Knight, and the Mustangs scored every point after halftime until the final 5:26. A team safety and Kendrick Raphael's 13-yard run, followed by Jennings' two-point pass to Derrick McFall, put SMU in front at 9:04 of the fourth.
SMU then failed to close. Syracuse answered with a field goal and the Angeli-to-Meyers touchdown, and a rally that should have defined the day became another road loss.
SMU touchdowns: Jalen Hale 9 YDS REC, Yamir Knight 14 YDS REC, Kendrick Raphael 13 YDS rush
Syracuse touchdowns: Steve Angeli 26 YDS rush, Ahmad Miller 1 YDS rush, Noah Meyers 2 YDS REC
Time of possession: SMU 30:26 – SYR 29:34
What It Means
SMU falls to 6-2, still perfect at home but now with losses in 2 of 3 road games. The Mustangs' passing offense is good enough to beat anyone, but this game showed what happens when it is paired with a stalled run game and loose ball security.
Syracuse climbs to 4-4 and evens its home mark at 2-2. The Orange did not win the yardage battle, but they won the turnover battle, every fourth down and the final 5:26, and that was enough to take down a ranked opponent.
