Nebraska hosts Washington on Saturday, October 31, at 8:00 p.m. ET at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, with the game on BTN. The matchup turns on the Cornhuskers' rushing attack against a Washington run defense that gives up real yardage. A wet forecast only sharpens that edge.

What Decides It

Nebraska should be able to run the ball all night.

The Cornhuskers average about 194 rushing yards a game, and Washington allows about 131 on the ground. That leaves Nebraska's run game producing roughly 63 more yards a game than the Huskies usually give up.

Jamal Rule is the engine. He has out-gained Washington's leading rusher, Brian Bonner Jr., on fewer carries, and he has found the end zone far more often.

Washington's passing game runs into the wrong defense.

The Huskies throw for nearly 283 yards a game, which is most of what their offense produces. Nebraska allows only about 172 passing yards a game, so Washington's most productive phase meets a stingy pass defense.

There is no easy fallback, either. Washington runs for about 104 yards a game, and Nebraska holds opponents to about 100 on the ground.

The weather tilts toward the team that can run.

Showers and gusting wind are in the Lincoln forecast. That is a bigger problem for an offense built around Demond Williams Jr.'s arm than for one that can hand the ball to Rule and grind.

Nebraska can win this game on the ground. Washington almost certainly has to win it through the air, in conditions that make that harder.

Players to Watch

Washington Huskies

Passing: Demond Williams Jr. – 116-174, 1,396 YDS, 8-3 (TD-INT)
Rushing: Brian Bonner Jr. – 64 ATT, 296 YDS, 1 TD
Receiving: Dezmen Roebuck – 48 REC, 484 YDS, 3 TD

Roebuck is the volume target. If Washington is going to move the ball against this pass defense, he will see plenty of it.

Nebraska Cornhuskers

Passing: Anthony Colandrea – 137-219, 1,570 YDS, 14-4 (TD-INT)
Rushing: Jamal Rule – 60 ATT, 391 YDS, 5 TD
Receiving: Kwazi Gilmer – 38 REC, 492 YDS, 7 TD

Gilmer is Colandrea's scoring threat. If the run game draws Washington's safeties forward, he is the one most likely to make them pay.

Weather

Forecast: Showers, 63°F, gusts 18 mph, 51% chance of precipitation

Rain and wind favor the offense with the stronger ground game, and the rushing numbers say that is Nebraska.

Prediction

Nebraska has dropped two straight, scoring 14 and 17 in those losses, so the offense needs a reset. This matchup offers one: a soft run defense and a forecast that rewards handing the ball off. Behind a defense allowing about 15 points a game, the Cornhuskers cover and the game stays under the total.
