Western Michigan beat Bowling Green 23-10 on Saturday at Waldo Stadium, and the Falcons' passing game decided it. Every Bowling Green turnover came through the air. The Broncos turned a long run, a short touchdown pass and a string of field goals into the win.
Bowling Green had the ball longer and converted more third downs. That rarely matters when a team gives possessions away without forcing a matching mistake in the passing game.
How It Happened
Bowling Green struck first. With 7:00 left in the first quarter, J. Kastantin found K. White for a 7-yard touchdown, and T. Kenner added the kick.
The lead lasted less than 4 minutes of game clock. C. Cabana broke an 82-yard touchdown run at 3:12 of the first quarter, and D. Kelly's kick tied it. That one play covered a large share of Western Michigan's 190 rushing yards on the day.
Western Michigan took the lead in the second quarter when B. Lowry hit R. Brotherton for a 6-yard touchdown at 6:36. Bowling Green answered just before the break, as Kenner drilled a 48-yard field goal with 5 seconds left.
The second half belonged to Kelly. He hit a 32-yarder at 9:11 of the third quarter, a 50-yarder at 13:27 of the fourth, and a 46-yarder with 15 seconds remaining. Bowling Green did not score after halftime.
Key Performers
C. Cabana (WMU): 82-yard rushing TD
D. Kelly (WMU): Field goals of 32, 50 and 46 YDS
B. Lowry (WMU): 6-yard TD pass to R. Brotherton
J. Kastantin (BGSU): 7-yard TD pass to K. White
WMU rushing: 39 ATT, 190 YDS, 4.9 per carry
BGSU passing: 20-32, 149 YDS, 3 interceptions
Cabana's run was the game's biggest swing. Kelly supplied the rest of the second-half margin with his leg. His 50-yarder early in the fourth quarter meant Bowling Green needed more than one score to catch up.
What It Means
The box score shows a closer game than the final. Bowling Green held the ball for more than 32 minutes and went 7-16 on third down, while Western Michigan converted just 4 of 14. The Broncos also lost 2 fumbles.
Efficiency settled it. Western Michigan threw only 18 passes and completed 9, but averaged about 8 yards per attempt to Bowling Green's 5. The Broncos also outgained the Falcons per carry and committed fewer penalties, finishing with 336 total yards to 274.
The interceptions were the difference in the turnover battle. Western Michigan threw none, so the Falcons' fumble recoveries only partly made up for the passes they gave away.
Western Michigan moves to 6-3 overall and 3-1 at home. Bowling Green falls to 2-7, including 1-4 on the road. The Falcons were competitive for a half, but an offense that throws 3 interceptions and gets shut out after the break will not win many road games.
